Car Chargers are available in three levels.
Level 1 Chargers (Supplied with Vehicle): This type of charger is typically supplied with your electric vehicle. Level 1 Chargers use a standard household 120-volt AC outlet and typically draw around 12 amps. This charger is the slowest and provides the least amount of power, adding around 2-5 miles of range per hour of charging
Level 2 Chargers (Installed by Electrician): This is the charger O.J. Mann installs in residential homes. Level 2 Chargers operate on a 240-volt AC electrical breaker, similar to what an electric dryer or oven uses. The amperage for Level 2 chargers can range from 16 amps to 80 amps, although 30 or 50 amps are commonly used in residential installations. The higher the amperage, the faster the charging speed. Level 2 chargers are significantly faster than Level 1 chargers and can add around 10-60 miles of range per hour of charging, depending on the vehicle and charger capacity. This type of charger is eligible for up $1,000 in rebates from Eversource, which includes $500 for the charger, and $500 for the installation.
Level 3 Chargers (Commercial): Level 3 Chargers, also known as DC fast chargers or rapid chargers, are high-power chargers typically found in public charging stations and businesses with fleets of vehicles..
O.J. Mann Electric will mount the car charger and perform all necessary labor and material to wire it to an electrical panel. The typical steps involved in an installation are as follows:
- Mounting the Charger: The car charger will be securely mounted on the wall near the intended charging area, typically in the garage, or outside the home where the car can be parked.
- Electrical Wiring: O.J. Mann will run electrical wiring from the charger and onto the closest electrical panel capable of supporting the charger, most commonly the main electrical panel. If any of the areas for wiring is within a finished space, the wiring will be sheathed in PVC piping. If it is accessible and open, the wiring will be mounted along the ceiling.
- Dedicated Electrical Breaker: A dedicated 240-volt breaker within the range of 30-50 amps will be added to the electrical panel. This breaker will serve the car charger alone, ensuring it has a separate circuit for safety and optimal performance. O.J. Mann will assess the electrical panel’s capacity and ensure it can handle the additional load from the car charger while still accommodating the existing electrical loads in your home. If the panel’s capacity is insufficient, O.J. Mann will recommend a service upgrade to support the car charger.
- Electrical Permit and Inspection: O.J. Mann will file an electrical permit for the installation. Once the work is completed, an inspection will be performed to ensure compliance with electrical codes and regulations.
